DESTINATIONS

Altinkum

Altinkum is the original resort in Didim, and its stunning beach has lured tourists since the early 70s. There are in fact three beaches in Altinkum, sensibly known as First or Main Beach, Second Beach (to the east) and Third Beach (to the west), as well as innumerable smaller sandy spots. Altinkum’s famous open-air nightclub, Medusa, lies between Main and Second beaches (access is by road on the land side) and is designed like an amphitheatre.

As well as its amazing golden sands (which in Turkish are altin-kum, giving the resort its name), Altinkum is also famous for the incredible 3,000 year old edifice dedicated to the ancient Greek sun god Apollo, where he was believed to speak through the priests of the oracle. The Temple of Apollo at Didyma is world-famous, and quite rightly the destination for tourists, students of archeology, classical literature and anyone with a yen for astonishment!

Mavisehir

Mavisehir (blue city) is an authentically Turkish resort village, part of Didim but looking out towards the Greek island of Samos. Mavisehir is loved by many for the prettiness of its little whitewashed villas on hills sloping down to the sea, and the lovely evening market selling local produce and handmade crafts and jewellry.

Mavisehir has its own little harbour and it is a popular location for fishing, or for simply enjoying a relaxing cold drink and a wonderful sunset over the western sea.

Davutlar National Park

Kusadasi

Kusadasi lies between Izmir and Bodrum, and is the closest Turkish ferry port to the Greek island of Samos. It is a famous cruise liner destination, and every year thousands of cruise ship passengers from all over the world dock in Kusadasi harbour and visit some of the resorts attractions, like the crusaders' fort on Pigeon Island (or Bird Island , giving Kus-adasi its name), Ladies Beach or the covered bazaar.

Kusadasi also makes a great base for excursions further afield - the House of the Virgin Mary, St John's Basilica, the cave of the Seven Sleepers, charming Selcuk, Sirince wine village and the truly astonishing ancient city of Ephesus are all within 40 minutes' drive of Kusadasi.

Bodrum

Bodrum is one of this area's most famous destinations. A cosmopolitan, upmarket resort, its apparent youthfulness belies thousands of years of history. Bodrum is home to the tomb of the Persian King Mausollos which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Little of the structure survives today but there is a museum where it once stood. Also worth seeing is Bodrum Castle, the castle of the Knights of St John of Malta, which was built by crusaders from the ruined remains of the Mausoleum. Bodrum Castle houses the fascinating Museum of Underwater Archeology and some beautiful gardens within its walls. Panoramic views from the battlements take in Bodrum Yacht Marina and the harbour.

Bodrum itself is attractive and a great shopping destination, with boutiques and shops selling tourist knick-knacks housed in picturesque little whitewashed buildings that line the cobbled streets of the town. Bodrum is also known for the famous open air nightclub Halikarnas, and earns its reputation as playground for Turkey's rich and famous in the summer, when wealthy Istanbullus and chic Europeans come to Bodrum to relax in their summer hideaways.
